Often asked Peter F. Drucker asked the people he worked with a simple question: “How do you want people to remember you?” And at the Francis Hesselbein Institute for Leadership, we unanimously agreed how important it is to play a role in inspiring the next generation of leaders. In 2009, the Heselbein Institute partnered with the University of Pittsburgh to launch the Heselbein Global Academy for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement project, which drew 300 talented students from all continents and showcased the work of Peter Drucker and Francis Hesselbein. The younger generation today—known as Millennials or Generation Y, born between 1980 and 2000—is not yet the oldest, but the most educated and diverse generation; The sheer scale of technology and the ease of traveling around the world have made their dreams come true in many ways. The movement of social networks and digital media, from traditional encrypted channels to Facebook and Twitter, has made them connected to the rest of the world so that they can wear global brands as well as engage with issues around the world in new proactive ways. They also developed networks of friends that included not only neighbors or their classmates in sports, but also friends from remote parts of the world. They may have never met these friends in person before, but communication between them has had a huge impact on their lives, and they develop a sense of global empathy, which is why I often refer to millennials as the global first generation.
