Throughout her life, the Washington Post reporter Souad Makhent, a German-born of Arab-Turkish origin, has sought to balance two aspects of her life: Islamic culture and Western culture. I tried to create a voice for her in the middle of those two cultures that were and still are in a state of misunderstanding.
In this lively and detailed book of her memoirs, we accompany Souad Makhent as she moves behind the prominent and hidden lines of jihad, starting from the alleys of Germany, where they radicalized their ideas who ended up planning the 9/11 attacks in New York; and the Iraqi regions where Shiites and Sunnis turned against each other; And it does not end with the Turkish-Syrian border, where ISIS is located. In her travels across the countries of the Middle East and North Africa, she recorded her experiences and the situations she was exposed to with government, intelligence and jihadist groups, and ordinary people, explaining the Arab Spring and its failure to reach its desired goal. Then she returns to Europe, starting with London, where she revealed the true identity of Jihadi John, then France and Belgium, back to Germany, where the jihadists did not stop terrorizing her.
Souad Makhnet's Arab-Turkish background opened doors for her towards the most wanted men around the world, who usually refuse to talk to Western journalists. She was not afraid to confront the most threatening figures from within the circle of Al-Qaeda, the Taliban, ISIS, and their affiliates. When she was asked to come alone for an interview, she didn't know what would happen to her.
