All my life I have been studying good thinking, so I know how important it is to make progress. In the first book I wrote in 1979, Think on These Things, I said, “Your life today is the product of your thinking yesterday. Your life tomorrow will be determined by what you think today.”1 The title of this book was inspired by the words of the wise, who urges us: All that is true, all that is noble, all that is just, all that is pure, all that is pleasant, all that is commendable, whether it is virtuous and whether it is praiseworthy, these are the things you should think about.2 My father, Melvin Maxwell, quotes these words in his conversation with me. He felt it was important. Why? Because he was an example of someone who changed his life by changing his thinking. If you meet my father, he will tell you that he was born with an instinctive tendency to think negatively. In addition, he grew up during the economic depression, and when he was six years old, his mother passed away. He was not a happy or optimistic kid. But in his teenage years, he began to see that all successful people he knew had in common: they filled their lives with positive thoughts about themselves and others. He longed to be as successful as they were, so he embarked on the daily task of changing his thinking. To his happiness, after much time and effort, he changed his mind. People who know my father today see him as a completely positive person. They will be surprised to learn that he started his life with a negative mindset. This change in his thinking allowed him to rise to a standard of life that seemed to be beyond his means. He became the most successful person in his professional circle. He also served as a college president and touched the lives of countless people. Even today he is my hero. People who know my father today see him as a completely positive person.
