The novel takes place in the Paris of the fifties. The city is teeming with expatriates, forbidden relationships and hidden violence, so David the American visits it, to be unable to suppress his impulses despite knowing its danger and deadly effects. After meeting a girl he loves and proposing to her, he encounters an Italian bartender, Giovanni, whose philosophy and vision are very different from the optimistic American ideas David has memorized by heart, and his life changes.
