Since this book was first published in 1998, many changes have occurred in both the field of Neuroscience and Amen Clinics; Our medical expertise in the areas of diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases has grown exponentially, and our activities have expanded from a single medical clinic serving only Northern California residents, to a group of clinics spread across the country treating children, adolescents, and adults from 111 countries. Our database of gamma brain scans—the primary functional brain imaging test we use at Amen Clinics—has increased from nearly 5,000 scans in 1998 to more than 100,000 in 2015; What made us one of the world leaders in the application of brain imaging sciences to help people suffering from emotional problems such as stress, depression, and bipolar disorder; Behavioral challenges such as different types of addiction, weight control, anger, or cognitive problems, such as brain fog, memory problems, and learning difficulties, including attention deficit disorder, which is also called attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. When this book was first written, the medical team at Amen Clinics was prescribing more psychiatric drugs to patients than we do today; Today we choose more natural ways to treat and strengthen the brain; Supplementation, and lifestyle changes (in terms of nutrition, exercise, gaining new knowledge, and so on) whenever possible. While we still use prescription drugs when needed, and believe that they save lives when used correctly, we fully believe that doctors must first not harm patients and use the least toxic and most effective treatments; It is not surprising that a new patient comes to Amen clinics for the first time after he has been taking four, five, or eight drugs prescribed by the doctor, and he is still suffering from the disease, which is now not surprising. Indeed, a child came to our clinic in Reston, Virginia, and he was taking seventeen drugs. So we take more time to stop patients from taking these drugs than we do to prescribe new ones. We discovered that most of our new patients were not advised by their old doctors to lead a healthy lifestyle or take a supplement before they came to us
